Kings Canyon and the West McDonald Ranges

If you want a shot of awe-inspiring-life-perspective-humbling-ant-like-feeling then Kings Canyon is the place to go! We did a 4 hour hike which takes you around the rim of the canyon and into the depths of the Garden of Eden where we were witness to plants that were living relics of the past. Plants that literally have not been disturbed for hundreds and thousands of years and whose evolved relatives live on in relative peace and quiet. We ate very tasty bush figs (that we had learnt about at Uluru) and had our first swim au natural. Best hike of the trip so far!

After all of that we definitely needed a relax. We purchased a $5 permit so that we could drive through the Mereenie Loop Road. It was our first off-road experience, comeplete with corrugations, but we made it and found ourselves at Ormiston Gorge, one of the many gorges across the West McDonald Ranges.  Hard to imagine that you would find such an oasis in the outback!
